Bodegas El Porvenir de los Andes

Nature

The vineyards are situated 1,750 metres above sea level in the North of Argentina, in Cafayate Valley, a land once occupied by the Incas.

This wine region, naturally offers excellent conditions for the growing of exceptional vineyards because of its unique micro-climate. The combination of the temperature gap –hot sunny days and cool nights- the abundant sunshine, very little rainfall, relatively low humidity, and a rocky soil, result in an ideal land for the growth of noble vines.

The 80 hectares of vineyards are owned outright by the Marcuzzi de Romero family, which allows them to control all elements of the process. The planting is done with great care utilising a trellis cordon structure for growth and a drip irrigation system for water.

The planted varieties are Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat, Syrah, Torrontés, Merlot, and Petit Verdot

The Winemaking Process

The grapes are manually harvested and transported to the winery in small boxes that help to protect the grapes from not being crushed in the transportation process. Once they arrive, the 20 kg boxes are elevated by conveyor belt where the selection process and picking is done. The stems are removed manually by 6 employees, and lastly, they are gently passed through a mill which uses gravity to slowly transport the grapes and their juices into the tanks where the fermentation process begins.

Once the wine is processed, it is placed in one of the winery’s 450 American or French Oak barrels where the ageing process begins, ranging from 6 to 12 months.

The Incas and the Calchaquíes

El Porvenir de los Andes makes wines of high altitude, like its ancestors, maintaining the same respect to nature for the “Pachamama” or Mother Earth. In the times of the Incan Empire of the 15th Century the Incas cultivated a system of terraced canals to take advantage of the rainwater to water their crops.

Many important tribes occupied the lands of Northern Argentina, the most important among them all, the Calchaquíes. Today, the descendants of these people still live and work within this region.

El Porvenir de los Andes uses The Sacred Inca Cross as the symbol that represents the winery. The same Inca Cross can also be found throughout Calchaqui Valley on local handcrafts and textiles where it continues its presence representing the magic of the Calchaquí people.

The textiles were of great importance in the Andean culture, being one of the most important artistic expressions of this people.

The winery's co-founder, Carmen Marcuzzi de Romero, has a dedicated passion for collecting Andean textiles which are on display throughout the winery. The purpose of this exhibition is to promote the beauty, the art and the attention to detail quality of the Inca Culture. The exhibition expresses an admiration for textile art which requires dedication, patience, the use of noble materials, and the respect of nature for the creation of one-of-a-kind pieces with unique personality. The symmetry of the textile art and the wine produced is the magic that can be enjoyed when you open a bottle of El Porvenir de los Andes.
