Viña Tacama

Perú's first vineyard

vina tacama At a latitude of 14º South, Viña Tacama is one of the closest commercial vineyards to the Equator, benefiting from an altitude of 400m in the Valley of Ica, the centre of Peru's wine industry. This fertile oasis is surrounded by desert some 30 miles from the cool Pacific coast and 190 miles south of Lima.

The valley is particularly suitable for viticulture with its benign dry climate and wide variation in temperature from day to night. Due to the lack of rainfall, during the flood season Tacama uses an irrigation system consisting of both canals and deep wells. The sandy and stoney alluvial soil of the valley was created by huge mud slides from the Andes Mountains millions of years ago.

Many eminent advisors from France supply continuous advice to Tacama and are credited by the family for the success of their wines. These include, amongst others, Professors Jean Ribéreau-Gayon, Émile Peynaud, Max Rives, Alain Carbonneau and Pascal Ribéreau-Gayon

Robert Niederman, a French winemaker, has been at Viña Tacama since 1961, and is supported by a team of young winemakers.
