San Pedro de Yacochuya

One of the highest vineyard sites in the world.

san pedro de yacochuya Yacochuya is only 8 kilometres from Cafayate where the Yacochuya River, “clear water” in the local Quechua language, gives its name to the area.

At 2,030 metres above sea level, its terroir makes it something unique and matchless, at least according to the well respected Pomerol enologist Michel Rolland.

In the 1990's he partnered with Arnaldo Etchart to develop wines from San Pedro's 16 hectares of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat and Torrontés, on the slopes of the Andean foothills. Their first ever harvest at San Pedro was in 1999.

This spectacular location is one of the highest vineyard sites in the world and the area is already well known by connoisseurs for its distinguished Torrontés and Malbecs. Yacochuya red wines have become a leading exponent of Argentinean enology in just a few years. The winery at San Pedro has a production capacity of 90,000 litres.

The 60-year-old red varieties grow in the “espaldero” arrangement - vine rows consisting of two stakes, one at each end, joined by wires to guide growth in a vertical direction. They are irrigated by furrows with spring waters.
