Uruguay's emblematic grape is the Tannat introduced in 1870 by Basque immigrants and adapting itself perfectly to the local soil and climate. Uruguay is the only country in the world where significant amounts of Tannat are grown and currently represents approximately a third of all wine produced in the country.
