The winery was founded in 1892 when the French brothers David and Salvador Michel planted the first vines. They were attracted by distinctive terroir of the Cafayate Valley, good for production of quality grapes.
The winery took it's name from the legend of El Esteco City. According to this tale, Esteco was an opulent city in the north of Argentina whose buildings were covered with silver and its people dressed in gold.
In 1692 an earthquake buried the city and its treasures.
In the late 1970's the company bought the El Esteco estate and in honour of the legend, El Esteco produces the best grapes used for Michel Torino's top wines.
